Book Summary:
(Taken from back cover)
Originally published as The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., this collection of larger-than-life tales gave America its own haunted mythology while arguably creating the modern short story. These stories and essays, by turns chilling and charming, bring to life characters that continue to capture our imaginations today: the superstitious schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane; the pumpkin-topped Headless Horseman; and Rip van Winkle, who slept through the Revolutionary War. With an introduction by Irving expert Elizabeth L. Bradley, this new edition of Irving's greatest work demonstrates how inextricably his tales are woven into the fabric of American culture and celebrates his enduring contributions to the dream life of a nation.

Mandy's Review:
My first encounter with Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman that I can recall was the Disney version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Don't remember it? Here's a still from the movie:
Now do you remember? I had to have been younger than 10 when I first saw this movie. I immediately fell in love. So, when Penguin asked me if I wanted a copy of Washington Irving's collection I couldn't help but say 'yes!' And I'm so glad I did.
For someone who loves and breathes books, I must shamefully admit that I have never read any of Washington Irving's work before receiving this book for review. Yes, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is included in that mix.
The stories and essays in this collection are absolutely phenomenal ... and I'm not usually a fan of the classics because of the old English wording. I just find it can be difficult to read and I have a hard time keeping my attention in the story. However, Irving wrote in such a descriptive way that the old English verbiage didn't bother me in the least. To say I ADORED this book would be an understatement. It's just phenomenal.
