This week, my third sentence comes from The Taker by Alma Katsu:

"His hands are heavy on the steering wheel; he is groggy, having woken just in time to make the drive to the hospital for the night shift."

I've felt like this many times while working night shift.  I like that, already, I can relate to a character in this novel.  It is kind of mundane, though, to be a third sentence in the first chapter.  I know, I know ... the author has to set up the book somehow. 

I have heard many good reviews for this book so I am keeping an open mind.

This week, my third sentence comes from Centuries of June by Keith Donohue:

"Facedown on the bathroom floor, I watched my blood escape from me, spreading across the cool ceramic tiles like an oil slick, too bright and theatrical to be real."

Is this person male or female?  Why are they facedown in the bathroom?  Why are they bleeding?  Is there somebody there who hurt them in some way or did they injure themselves?  What series of events led up to them being facedown in the bathroom?  Why the bathroom?  Why not the bedroom, living room, kitchen or hallway?

Again, another TST where I have nothing but questions pertaining to my third sentence selection.  Somebody want to give me the answers now or should I read the book to find them out on my own?  Read the book, you say?  Alrighty then ... Check back soon to read my review ... =)

This week, my third sentence comes from Mieradome by Kate O'Hegarty:

Thousands of goose bumps burst from her skin, her muscles tensed; her life hung in the balance.

Whose life?  Why is it in the balance?  What is she seeing or experiencing that is causing her goose bumps and letting her know she's in danger?  All I have are questions and would like some answers, please ... someone ... anyone ... ???

This week, my third sentence comes from Tomorrow's Guardian by Richard Denning:

Edward sidestepped to dodge the attack and clipped the enemy on the back of the head with the butt of his revolver - the blow sent the warrior stumbling to the ground.

It's only the third sentence and already we have action.  I hope the remainder of the book stays as engaging as the first few sentences!  One does wonder, though, why they're even fighting in the first place.  Is it a war or a personal affair?

This week, my third sentence comes from The Murderer's Daughters by Randy Susan Meyers:

Essentially, Mama regarded me as a miniature hand servant ...

I'm confused ... don't all parents treat their children like that when they're old enough?  Of course this seems to be coming from the child's point-of-view and if you're a parent, you know how distorted this can be sometimes.  Not that they can help it.  It's just that they think they know all the facts of every situation around them when, sometimes, they have no idea what their parents (or step-parents) go through.

This week, my third sentence comes from A World I Never Made by James LePore:

She was fourteen or so, selling flowers on the Street of Flowers, and had the look of a young Madonna.

Do we have a Street of Flowers in the States?  Is this in another country?  Is the author referring to Madonna the singer or the Virgin Mary?  Why is the author even mentioning the girl selling flowers?  Is she a vital part of the story to come?  I am intrigued and want to know more ...

This week, my third sentence comes from The End Is Near by Harry Ramble:

I woke from a sweaty, haunted nap and there she was, sitting in the wooden chair by the door.

Wow ... I'm not sure which is weirder ... sitting in a chair watching someone have "a sweaty, haunted nap" and not bothering to wake them or being the one to wake up and seeing someone sitting there watching you.

Does this lady live in this house?  If not, how'd she get in?  Did someone let her in?  Did she break in?  Wait a minute ... is she psycho?  Unstable?  Is she going to kill him?

Let me stop here before my mind breaks free of its leash and runs rampant across the field of my imagination.
